CCTV News Channel’s special program “Comprehensively Deepen Reforms and China’s Modernization” launched a major report: Building a modern industrial system and laying a solid foundation for new quality productivity, with a focus on Jiangxi’s LED industry.
Innovation is the driving force and source of economic development. The modern industrial system is the key support for high-quality development and an important symbol of modernization. When it comes to the electronic information industry, people first think of coastal cities such as Shenzhen and Dongguan, the “world factory”. However, in recent years, Jiangxi’s electronic information industry has emerged as a force that cannot be ignored in the industrial landscape. Why can Jiangxi stand out in the fiercely competitive electronic information industry track? Now, let’s go to the LED production base in Nanchang to see the development logic hidden behind the industrial clusters that connect points into lines and lines into surfaces.
In the Meiling Tunnel in Nanchang, Jiangxi, the photo in the reporter’s hand is the lighting installed on the top of the tunnel. The more than 1,700 tunnel lighting lamps here all use LED technology with my country’s independent intellectual property rights. So, what is LED? What is the difference between them and ordinary light sources?
LED is a third-generation semiconductor light source. From large LED high-definition screens and large street lamps covering the entire wall to small mobile phone flashlights and smart wearables, they are all its application areas. Today, LED, which seems to be blooming everywhere, had a long journey from technology research and development to large-scale production lines.
The ultimate goal of strong technology is to strengthen the industry. It took the company six years to develop from laboratory technology to large-scale mass production, and in 2012, high-power LED chips with silicon substrates were launched. But Wang Qiong was mixed with joy and sorrow at that time.
At that time, many downstream lighting application companies in the market were accustomed to using mature sapphire substrate LED chips, and they believed that silicon substrate LED chips were supplied by Jingneng Optoelectronics alone, which worried that it would affect the security of the supply chain.
To change, we must promote the extension and supplement of the industrial chain. In 2015, Jiangxi Province issued the “Implementation Plan for Building Nanchang Optical Valley and Jiangxi LED Industrial Base”, with the goal of building “Nanchang Optical Valley” and forming a regional layout with Nanchang High-tech Zone as the core area, which will eventually radiate the whole country.
Wan Weiguo said: “Mobilize these manpower and funds, including technology and industry, to quickly strengthen and expand the silicon substrate industry.”
Immediately afterwards, various places in Jiangxi issued a series of LED industry policies, laid out the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain, recruited LED mid- and downstream enterprises and supporting facilities such as automotive lighting and high-density display screens from all over the world, and attracted a large number of leading enterprises to settle in Jiangxi.
Continue to promote semiconductor lighting technological innovation, application promotion and other projects. In 2020, Jiangxi will implement the industrial chain leader system, with members of the provincial leadership team serving as chain leaders to promote the resolution of major problems encountered by enterprises in production, operation, development and growth at a high level.
In 2023, Jiangxi’s LED industry achieved revenue of 71.59 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.9%. It has formed a full-chain layout of the LED industry integrating epitaxy, chips, packaging, modules, and applications, and is constantly upgrading towards diversification, specialization, and refinement.
